ZAMBIA

ZAMBIA - OCTOBER 14 2013: Local people go about day to day life

Welcome to

Region of Zambia

Let us present

Who we are

The congregation of the Missionaries of Mariannhill developed out of the Trappist mission outreach to South Africa in 1882 founded by prior Francis Pfanner. He became the first Abbot of Mariannhill Monastery in 1885. The Trappists dedicated their first foundation in Natal to Mary and her mother, Anne; hence, Mary-Anne-hill. CMM became an independent missionary congregation in 1909, the same year in which its pioneering Trappist (Abbot Francis Pfanner) died. We are both Religious and Missionaries (priests and Brothers) who live in the community. As religious in Zambia and wherever we are found, our Trappist roots leads us back to St. Benedict, and as Missionaries we are connected with the early missionaries of Mariannhill and their tireless leader Abbot Francis Pfanner. The Benedictine motto of ‘Ora et Labora’ combines these two traits of our Congregational history and is our legacy.

Currently, in Zambia, we are found in Lusaka Province, Lusaka Archdiocese (Chunga Area St. Stephen the Martyr, In Makeni-Engelmer House of Formation and the Regional Mother House).  Northern Province, Kasama Archdiocese (Mungwi St. Margret, Kapata St. Kizito, Nseluka St. Francis of Assis and a Community and Postulancy House in Kasembo Farms right in Kasama). In Copperbelt, Ndola Diocese we are in Chambishi town, St. Nicholas. We are also in Eastern Province, Chipata Diocese- Ukwimi St. Charles Lwanga Parish. Additionally, we have Mariannhill Missionaries working in Africa (Zambia, Zimbabwe, South Africa, Mozambique, East Africa Kenya and Tanzania respectively), Europe (Rome, Austria, Switzerland, Netherlands, Germany and Spain), Oceania (Papua New Guinea), America (Canada, and Colombia).

Kasembo Farms

sustainability

As earlier mentioned in the brief history of our region there was a time when suitable accommodation for the postulants was wanted, a rented house was found in Kasama, Kasembo Farms. When this farm was put on sale it was suggested that acquiring it our unit might well have a source of income so it was. Kasembo is the biggest project with the potential to grow bigger. Belonging to the farm is a shop in town from where its produce (Pork, Beef, Milk, Eggs, Chicken, Feed and Gasses) are being sold at the large scale. The other asset is a guest house.

In Makeni just at the Mother House upon entering the gate to your right are flats for rent and a garden for self-sustainability, not only that piggery and poultry inside the yard of Formation house and Regional House is underway.

Additionally, a day care school is being constructed to the left as you enter the main gate, another huge project to help the community and children around and far academically. Not forgetting Parishes which are attached to schools to help community people access better education of their children and other small projects.

Our way of life just like our spirituality is linked to the same spirit that animated the life and work of Abbot Francis during the process of the founding and development of Mariannhill hence, the Region of Zambia today still upholds the culture of hard working through various projects in the parishes and the communities where we are found and work. The ancient-motto “Ora et Labola” is not only displayed at the entrance gate to our mother house in Lusaka, this integration of prayer and work is a guiding principle for us, therefore, we have projects underway.

Education

teachers, lecturers, administrators

CMMs have provided several teachers, lecturers and administrators in both lower and higher learning institutions. Some parishes have community schools to provide especially Primäry education especially for the most vulnerable.

farming

source of income

Following the example of Bernard Huss, some confreres have taken up farming and helping especially the populace with some farming methods on a subsistence farming level. They also provide employment helping to curb unemployment in the country.
