Mariannhill’s presence in Spain dates back to the early sixties of the last century. The Spanish priest D. Antonio Sánchez-Elvira Ramos (+), then a member of the Spanish Institute of Foreign Missions, being a missionary in ancient Rhodesia, entered in 1958 at the Mariannhill Novitiate in South Africa, making his first profession on July 26 from 1959.
Antonio arrived in Madrid on March 13, 1960 with the commission to found Mariannhill in Spain. In July of that same year the Procuration of Spain was canonically established, placing it at number 22 of Angel Muñoz street, in Madrid.

We, the Missionaries of Mariannhill, understand our presence in Spain as a service to the Church’s mission. Such service is manifested in the effort to live the mission of our Congregation, set down in n. 104 of our Constitutions and Regulations.Keeping in mind the situation of the Church and of society in Spain, we structure the living of such mission in three main areas. Namely:
Our presence in the Church of Spain is for it a permanent reminder of its responsibility on behalf of the mission “ad gentes”. In the dioceses in which our communities are, we will be at the service of the diocesan structures in charge of the missionary animation. Since we are integrated in the Union of Missionary Institutes, we will cooperate in the Joint Service of Missionary Animation. We will cooperate with other organizations or groups that are interested in the issues of the Developing World and to which our missionary experience and formation may be of interest.
Our presence in the Church in Spain offers a specific channel of religious consecration as a Priest or Brother, and of serious commitment as a Lay missionary, to which the Christian communities may direct their vocations. All our communities must be reception centres, where young men who could show some interest for Mariannhill may receive vocational information, help and accompaniment. Even though arousing vocations for Mariannhill is the responsibility of each member of the Province, the Vocational Promoter appointed to this task is in charge of attending to all those who show some interest in Mariannhill.
At the end of 2007, was established in our house of Salamanca an International Training Center, which was opened with the arrival of two young Mariannhill religious, from Mozambique, who, having completed their training were ordained priests at the end of 2011, andtoday they are the PP. Anselmo José Alfândega CMM and Muarrapaz Silva CMM. After them, other generations of young Mariannhill religious from our Provinces in Africa have come to form in our house in Salamanca.
Making Mariannhill – its history, its work, its charism – known is a spontaneous demand of those of us who are Missionaries of Mariannhill and a specific way of sharing the gift we have received. Making Mariannhill known is the personal responsibility of each confrere, taking advantage for it at any occasion in his relationship with his relatives, friends, acquaintances and benefactors. At a community level, the celebrations of the main feasts of the Congregation and any other kind of celebrations should be used for a more direct and periodic contact with the already mentioned groups of persons.
Both at the personal and community level, we should take advantage of all the facilities that the social communication media offer us, to make Mariannhill known. To widen the extent of our missionary efficacy and maintain the established contacts we shall maintain our Web page actualized and will publish the magazines “Familia Mariannhill” and “Brief aus Spanien”. All the members of the Province shall make efforts to increase the number of subscribers to the magazine. The Missions Procurator and the Person-in-charge of the Publications written in Spanish take care of the preparation of materials of written propaganda about Mariannhill.
